The Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program (DBG Detroit) is a transformative mentorship program that provides individualized academic plans and measured impact to set the standard in youth development. With a 100% high-school graduation rate for the last 16 years, DBG is dedicated to changing broken systems and providing a brighter future for children. Since 2007, DBG has been breaking down barriers, offering vital resources, and helping students succeed through a leading out-of-school time program focused on academic achievement and holistic support.
DBG believes that education is a human right and offers a personalized learning plan for each student, enrichment programming, college and career readiness, social-emotional skills building, and basic needs support. By providing coaching, mentorship, and peer support, DBG reinforces a positive self-image and offers a range of activities from coding classes to career exploration. The organization is committed to knocking down barriers like food insecurity and the digital divide to ensure that nothing stands in the way of their students’ success.
Founded in 2007 by Khali Sweeney, DBG has grown to become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers young people through free academic and athletic programs. With a focus on long-term mentorship and support, DBG aims to shape the future leaders of tomorrow by providing a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment for students ages 8-18. Through generous donations and community support, DBG continues to make a significant impact on increasing literacy levels and student achievement, with a mission to train kids for life and build a strong foundation for success.
