At Fabin Rosa BJJ Belle Isle, we pride ourselves on creating a BJJ environment that is fun, educational, safe, and empowering. It’s a requirement that everybody leaves their ego at the door. What we practice is a martial art and can be dangerous, if not downright lethal. However, if practiced correctly, it can be playful while still being intense and challenging. Our jiu-jitsu classes are designed for any experience or age, from kids to professionals, where they can grow their martial art style in a safe and educational setting. It is the force of leverage against brute force.” Brazilian jiu-jitsu was formed from Kodokan Judo ground fighting (newaza) fundamentals that were taught to Carlos Gracie & Luiz França by Mitsuyo Maeda and Soshihiro Satake. Carlos Gracie is known as the Founder and Creator of Modern Jiu-Jitsu (Gracie Jiu-Jitsu/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). Brazilian jiu-jitsu eventually came to be its own art through the experimentations, practices, and adaptation of the Judo knowledge of Carlos and Hélio Gracie, who then passed their knowledge on to their extended family.
BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique and leverage. Most notably, by taking the fight to the ground and then applying joint locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. This is a key difference from Muay Thai, where fighting traditionally takes place upright. There are other differences between the two, but fundamentally, BJJ and Muay Thai are two pretty different styles of martial arts. BJJ, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, training can be used for sports grappling tournaments and mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions or self-defense. Sparring (commonly referred to as “rolling”) and drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through ranks. Our jiu-jitsu classes are designed to teach you BJJ techniques but also the history and core fundamentals of this style.
