Ground Theory Jiu Jitsu is a martial arts academy in Lawrence, Kansas, founded by Matt and Heidi Thompson. Matt and Heidi Thompson’s journey in Jiu Jitsu began during their time at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, where they trained under the guidance of black belt instructors. Inspired by the positive impact of Jiu Jitsu on their lives, they decided to share their passion by establishing a community-focused academy in Lawrence. With a strong emphasis on self-defense, competition training, and overall physical fitness, Ground Theory Jiu Jitsu aims to empower individuals to become the best versions of themselves through the art of Jiu Jitsu.
Ground Theory Jiu Jitsu prides itself on offering beginner-friendly classes that welcome individuals from diverse backgrounds. Matt and Heidi, both accomplished 1st-degree black belts, have competed at various levels and are dedicated to providing a supportive learning environment for students to progress in their Jiu Jitsu journey. Through collaborations with organizations like We Defy Foundation and Girls in Gis, they actively support disabled veterans and female grapplers, embodying the academy’s commitment to community engagement and personal development.
