Detailed Information

Umar Boxing is a unique organization that combines academic development and athletic training for at-risk children in the Druid Heights Community of Baltimore City. With a focus on providing a safe and healthy environment for children to excel both academically and athletically, Umar Boxing stands out by offering a rare combination of boxing and education under one roof. The program’s motto, “no hooks before books,” emphasizes the importance of academic success as the primary goal, with boxing serving as a motivating factor for students to actively participate in the academic program.

Since 1996, Umar Boxing has been a centralized 12-month safe haven for children between the ages of 8 to 18, offering after-school programs during the school year and various camp opportunities in the summer. The organization is a registered facility with USA Boxing, ensuring that boxers are supervised and trained by certified trainers. Umar’s staff includes certified Baltimore City educators and USA boxing trainers, providing a comprehensive learning and training experience that promotes focus, discipline, self-esteem, respect, and physical and mental fitness.

In addition to academic support and boxing training, Umar Boxing also offers GED tutoring, college application assistance, free yoga classes, mentorship programs, and community outreach initiatives such as providing fresh fruits and vegetables to the community. Led by Executive Director Marvin McDowell, a former professional boxer and member of Maryland’s Boxing Hall of Fame, Umar Boxing is dedicated to providing hope and opportunity to Baltimore City’s at-risk children, addressing the challenges of violent crime, drug use, and inadequate education through a holistic approach to youth development.
