Historic Volk Gymnasium is a tri-level complex located at 14th and Illinois Street, serving as the primary home for the Mines wrestling team. The facility boasts a competition gym, two racquetball/handball courts, locker space, and administrative offices for the Mines Athletics Department. Additionally, it provides practice space for basketball and volleyball, making it a popular on-campus recreation spot for various sports activities.
In 2018-19, Volk Gym underwent a significant renovation, including the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting and a complete resurfacing of the maple floor. The gym now features the Mines Wrestling Wall of Champions, showcasing the program’s rich history of success with displays of Hall of Famers, national champions, and all-Americans. This project was made possible by a generous lead gift from alumnus Ben Mares ’73, highlighting the strong connection between the facility and its supportive community.
With seating accommodations for 500 spectators, Volk Gymnasium offers an exciting venue for wrestling events, with tickets available for purchase at the gate on meet days. The facility also provides parking options for visitors and clear entrance instructions for a seamless experience. As a hub for various Mines sports teams and a hub for campus recreation, Volk Gym continues to play a vital role in fostering athletic excellence and community engagement at Colorado School of Mines.
